Why Peonies are the perfect flower for every occasion

Red Charm Peonie. SuziQ's Garden Queenstown

Peony Season is one of my favourite times of the year. The cold of the winter starts to fade away and the longer days encourage new buds on every plant. At SuziQ’s garden, our peonies start to bloom from early November to late December, depending on the variety. We grow dozens of varieties of peonies ranging in colours from blush to crimson to white.

Peonies are one of the most popular flowers for bouquets and special occasions and for good reason. Their sweet fragrance paired with their lush, full blooms make them an excellent choice for those looking for classic elegance. Here are five reasons to choose peonies for your next event.

1. Peony flowers come in a variety of colours perfect for any occasion

We grow a variety of peonies to cover every range of colour possible. Our blooms feature a wide range of pinks, reds, blushes, coral and whites. The variety of peony blooms ensure that the flower will fit in perfectly with any colour pattern for your occasion. Make the peonies the star of the show by choosing a variety with deep crimson petals or blend them into the mix with a variety that has subtle cream shades. Whether you want bold or soft, the peonies will be a perfect fit.

All my peonies have a high fragrance.

2. They look great with other flowers

Peonies are known for their big full blooms which make them ideal for bouquets and compliment other subtle flower types. The presence of one peony can easily fill-out a bouquet to make it look lusher and full, meaning you get more flower with a peony than you would with another type of flower. Peonies also have long stems making the perfect flower to add to a wedding bouquet or to include in a wreath. This versatile flower will look great anywhere.

3. Peonies are long-lasting

Peonies are known for their long vase life and will last two weeks if cared for properly.  At SuziQ’s we have an onsite chiller to store peony bunches until required for a special occasion and the long vase life of the peony makes this an easy flower keep. The rate at which the blooms open depends on the temperature of the room so a colder room will help delay a premature bloom.

Often special occasions are planned well before anyone can truly predict when their flowers will bloom. Having a plant that has a long vase life will ensure your flower stays in full bloom for your occasion.

4. Peonies are easy to care for

Once cut, peony flower will last for a long time but a little additional care will help keep your peonies looking fresh for as long as possible. After your flowers have been cut, put them in a clean vase with at least 3 to 4 inches of room temperature water. You only want the stem to be in the water so pinch off any foliage that gets submerged in the water. Replace with chilled water regularly to keep your peonies fresh. You can also re-cut the stems every few days to maximize the peonies’ life.

5. Fragrant peonies will freshen up your room

Peony flowers are undoubtedly stunning to look at but they will also transform your room in another way: through their sweet, floral fragrance. If you want to add a fragrant aroma to your special occasion, you can’t go wrong with peonies. Peony fragrances can be sweet, spicy and even citrusy. At SuziQ’s our peony varieties range from slightly fragrant to extremely fragrant.

At SuziQ’s Garden, we grow peonies for every occasion and happily service the Wanaka, Queenstown and Central Otago areas. We work with both area florists and directly with customers to help sort your peony needs. Our flowers bloom from early November to late December and we welcome guests to our farm during our open season (Late October – December 24th).
